Fly from Bangkok, Delhi, Calcutta, or Kathmandu to Paro to begin your introductory tour of Bhutan. Spend three nights in Thimphu, touring this charming capital. Thimphu is famed for its traditions of weaving, painting, and mask making. A day excursion takes you to Punakha. En route you will see the grand dzongs, or fortresses, of Wangdiphodrang and Punakha. Drive to Paro for a night. Spend the day exploring the magnificent hills around the town. A hike amongst the Himalayan foothills takes you to a superb vantage point for Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery, which clings to a sheer cliff. Severely damaged in a fire in 1998, the monastery is currently being restored. Tour Drukgyal Dzong, whose massive ruins offer insight into the unique construction of Bhutan's famous dzongs.
